Ballistic steel is the same material used in military vehicles to protect against roadside bombs. AK47 rounds will not penetrate the ballistic military grade 1/4 inch steel. Armed Intruder Protection:

There are two protection levels. All of our safe rooms are made of 1/4 inch steel to provide a minimum of NIJ level IIIA protection against hand guns, and shotguns, which make up 90% of violent crimes, according to the Bureau Of Justice Statistics. Protection from high caliber weapons and armor piercing rounds is available with the Ballistic Option. Our Ballistic Option used military grade steel that is used in combat vehicles to provide NIJ Level III protection up to 7.62 NATO rounds.
